Office hours: a Hybrid Benefit trick worth stealing

Every other Wednesday, the FinOps toolkit’s maintainers hold open office hours: no agenda, just whoever shows up with a question. This one started as a dashboard walkthrough and ended up covering two things worth knowing whether or not you use the toolkit.

A dashboard number that looked broken wasn’t

One attendee’s Azure Data Explorer dashboard wasn’t populating a “committed discount usage” column, and it looked like a bug. It wasn’t: the FinOps toolkit’s Rate Optimization dashboard ingests that data but doesn’t currently use it in any report. What looked like missing data was working as designed, and the conversation that followed turned into a short coaching session on effective savings rate, the metric that actually matters for judging whether your commitment discounts are pulling their weight.

The lesson generalizes past this one dashboard: before you chase a data bug, check whether the field is even supposed to be used yet.

The Hybrid Benefit trick more teams should use

A Microsoft field engineer who’s spent years embedded with FinOps toolkit customers shared a pattern seen repeatedly: organizations renegotiating their Azure agreement to bring on-premises Windows and SQL Server licensing rates into the deal, then dropping perpetual licensing entirely in favor of Azure Hybrid Benefit and Arc-metered pay-as-you-go. The effect is CapEx turning into OpEx, and it stops you paying for high-watermark capacity you don’t use.

One practical guardrail: don’t apply Hybrid Benefit to a small VM. Licenses come in blocks of eight cores, so a 2-core VM wastes six cores of entitlement. The rule of thumb is a breakeven around two to three vCPUs.

None of this is FinOps toolkit specific. It’s a licensing lever most teams doing Azure cost work have probably never priced out.
