I love ‘em. Those neat little DVD vending machines known as Redbox have been around for a while now. And they’ve been getting more popular. In the last month, I’ve had 2 more installed within 3 miles of my home, bringing the grand total to 9 Redboxes within 10 miles of where I live.
Now, I love a good movie as much as the next person, but the whole Redbox experience is sometimes very irritating for me. To help alleviate this for myself and other customers, I’ve created a Redbox Code of Conduct.
1. Before arriving at Redbox, individual shall:
- Properly package any returns (i.e. labels facing correct direction and cases snapped closed)
- Have in mind primary and secondary selections of movies for purchase
- Reserve any selections of movies via the Redbox website, as this expedites the checkout process
- Decide who shall select the movie(s); groups larger than two individuals shall not be permitted, as this complicates the selection process, akin to “too many cooks in the kitchen…”
2. Individuals at Redbox, first in line, shall:
- Be conscious of any “return-only” guests who may be standing behind them. Returns shall take priority over purchases, as they require little time and increase the selection of movies at said Redbox
- Make expedient selections of a movie/movies.
- If a selection of said movies cannot be made in a timely manner, individuals shall kindly allow the next person in line to go ahead, or skip line.
3. Individuals at Redbox, second in line, shall:
- Give ample opportunity for the first in line to notice their presence (i.e. clearing one’s throat, shuffling one’s feet, etc.) and abide by code of conduct
- Very politely assert themselves if the individual(s) first in line are not aware of, or refuse to abide by said code of conduct
4. Individuals at Redbox, third in line, shall:
- Relinquish all rights of assertion to second in line
- Wait patiently to become second in line, at which point second in line rights may be assumed and asserted.
- Come back later, because it may take a while

It is rather appalling that you would have someone “assert” themselves over someone who has arrived prior to them just because they have to return a video. This opens up the possibility for conflict that is unnecessary. Some people are just going to be jerks because they can. Granted I am a “browser” and I do acknowledge people waiting behind me. I try and make my selections quickly. However sometimes you can not use the online rental. You have your max out and it will not allow you to do your online rental. So am I supposed to go to the kiosk, return my rentals, and then go back home to use the online rental process? Also you can only rent 1 video at a time online. So if you were going to get 2 or 3 video’s you would have to have that many transactions. Why? It makes no sense. According to your “rules” If someone gets to the kiosk and is browsing. Maybe in the middle of renting and already has picked out a movie or two in their cart. They are supposed to then move and let people return videos? So they then have to go through and pick out movies again. Then end up getting pushed to the end of the line if there is more then 1 person just “returning” videos. That is just unacceptable. People just have to learn some patience and respect for one another. I usually strike up conversations with the people in front/behind me. One time after I took longer then usual time I offered the guy one of my free codes and apologized for taking so long. If you really don’t feel like you can wait there is always another kiosk down the road!

if people aren’t smart enough to return a movie before the last minute than why should anyone pity them? The fact that I can make people owe more money kind of makes me want to go hang out around the redbox machines around 8 pm and see how many people i can annoy
